Palmistry हस्तरेखा

Yeh article abhi sirf English mein available hai.

Palmistry (हस्त रेखा शास्त्र — Hast Rekha Shastra) reads the lines, mounts, and shape of the hands. The Indian tradition (Samudrika Shastra — सामुद्रिक शास्त्र) is broader than just palms; it includes reading the whole body.

The 7 mounts (palm regions)

Each mount is named after a planet and reflects that planet's energies. Mounts are the fleshy raised areas on the palm.

MountLocationPlanetWhat it indicates (when developed)
JupiterBase of index fingerJupiterLeadership, ambition, religiousness, wisdom
SaturnBase of middle fingerSaturnDiscipline, depth, melancholy, scholarship
Apollo (Sun)Base of ring fingerSunFame, creativity, success in arts, charisma
MercuryBase of little fingerMercuryCommunication, business acumen, wit
Mars (upper / lower)Two zones — between thumb and index (lower), edge of palm above Mercury mount (upper)MarsCourage (lower) / endurance (upper)
VenusBase of thumb, large fleshy moundVenusLove, sensuality, vitality, music
Moon (Luna)Outer side of palm opposite thumb, lower halfMoonImagination, intuition, travel, restlessness

Reading rule: A developed mount (raised, full) indicates that planet's energy is strong in the person. A flat mount indicates that area is weak or undeveloped. Overly developed mounts often indicate excess of that quality.

1. Heart Line (Hridaya Rekha) — emotional life

Runs horizontally across the upper palm, from outer edge toward base of index/middle finger.

  • Long and clear → deep, expressive emotional life.
  • Short → reserved, practical about emotion.
  • Chained → emotional turbulence, multiple relationships.
  • Broken → emotional setbacks, heartbreaks.

2. Head Line (Mastishk Rekha) — intellect

Runs horizontally across the middle of the palm, typically starting near the thumb.

  • Long, straight → analytical, logical, focused thinking.
  • Curved, sloping down toward Mount of Moon → creative, imaginative, dreamy.
  • Joined with life line at start → cautious, family-tied early life.
  • Separated from life line at start → independent, adventurous.
  • Forked → versatile mind; both logical and creative.

3. Life Line (Jeevan Rekha) — vitality, life journey

Curves around the base of the thumb. Critical: The life line does NOT primarily indicate length of life. This is the single most-common palmistry misreading. The line indicates vitality, energy through life, and major life events.

  • Long and clear → vitality, health, smooth life pattern.
  • Short → not "short life" — typically means energy from external sources rather than internal stamina.
  • Breaks → major life transitions (which may or may not be challenges).

4. Fate Line / Saturn Line (Bhagya Rekha)

Runs vertically from the base of the palm toward Saturn mount. Not everyone has one.

  • Strong and unbroken → clear career path, sense of destiny.
  • Absent → self-directed; person makes their own way without external structure.
  • Multiple changes → career changes, evolving direction.
  • Late start → success comes after early struggle.

5. Sun Line / Apollo Line — fame, creativity

Vertical line toward the Sun/Apollo mount.

  • Present and clear → recognition, fame, creative success.
  • Absent → does not mean lack of success — many highly successful people lack a Sun line; just means less external recognition or success comes via other paths.

6. Mercury Line / Health Line

Vertical line toward Mercury mount.

  • Clear → strong health and business sense.
  • Broken or chained → health vulnerabilities (esp. digestion).

7. Marriage Lines (Vivaha Rekha)

Short horizontal lines at the edge of the palm just below the little finger.

  • Number of clear lines → number of significant relationships (sometimes interpreted as marriages — but in modern reading, deep relationships generally).
  • Long and unbroken → stable, lasting union.
  • Broken → separation or significant relationship change.
  • Many small lines → many shallow attractions.

8. Children Lines

Small vertical lines crossing the marriage lines. Each line traditionally = one child.

Hand shapes

In modern Western palmistry, hands are classified into 4 types based on the element of palm shape and finger length:

ShapePalmFingersElementCharacter
EarthSquareShortEarthPractical, steady, hardworking, grounded
AirSquare / rectangularLongAirIntellectual, communicative, restless
WaterLong / ovalLongWaterEmotional, intuitive, artistic, sensitive
FireLong / rectangularShortFireEnergetic, action-oriented, passionate

(There are also more granular 7-type classifications — pointed/conic, philosophic, mixed, etc. — in older texts.)

The thumb

The thumb is read separately and is considered very important in Indian palmistry:

  • Length:
  • Long thumb (extending past lower joint of index when held against the palm): strong willpower, leadership.
  • Short thumb: more emotional or impulsive, less willpower.
  • Phalanges (sections):
  • First (tip) phalanx = willpower.
  • Second phalanx = logic.
  • A long tip section + short second = will dominates reason.
  • A short tip + long second = reason dominates will.
  • Flexibility:
  • Flexible thumb (bends back easily) = adaptable, social.
  • Stiff thumb = stubborn, principled, sometimes rigid.

Fingerprints / Hand types in Samudrika

Indian Samudrika Shastra includes detailed classifications based on fingerprint patterns (loops, whorls, arches) and finger shapes. These are tied to past-life karma and personality archetype in classical readings. The Nadi tradition uses thumbprints to identify leaves.
