PART A — THE MOUNTS (पर्वत)

The mounts are the fleshy pads on the palm. Each is named for a planet (the same grahas as Jyotish) and governs a sphere of life and a set of traits. A mount can be:

Well-developed (normal): the trait is healthy and present
Over-developed (very high, hard, dominant): the trait is excessive
Deficient (flat or hollow): the trait is weak or lacking
Displaced (shifted toward a neighbor): the trait is colored by the neighboring mount

How to judge a mount: look for height, firmness, and whether it's centered under its finger. Press it — a firm, springy mount is "active"; a flabby high mount is potential not used; a flat mount is deficient.

Well-developed: Healthy ambition, leadership, confidence, generosity, dignity, capacity for inspiration and faith, just and fair.
Over-developed: Pride, arrogance, domineering, vanity, lust for power, religiosity bordering on fanaticism, gluttony.
Deficient/flat: Lack of ambition, low self-esteem, no leadership drive, irreverence, laziness about advancement.
Indian view: Strong Guru mount = wisdom, teaching, dharmic life, blessings of Jupiter; supports priests, teachers, advisors, judges.

Mount of Saturn (शनि) — discipline, solitude, wisdom, fate

Sphere: Responsibility, study, prudence, solitude, philosophy, the serious side of life, perseverance, agriculture/land/mines.

Well-developed: Sober, prudent, studious, responsible, capable of deep concentration and patience, fond of solitude and research.
Over-developed: Melancholy, morbidity, pessimism, isolation, suspicion, miserliness, gloom, fatalism.
Deficient/flat: Frivolity, lack of seriousness, no perseverance, dislike of routine and responsibility (a small Saturn mount is actually common and not a defect — Saturn is naturally restrained).
Indian view: Shani mount tied to karma, hard labor, justice, delayed rewards, discipline; a balanced Saturn brings depth and endurance.

Mount of Apollo / Sun (सूर्य) — creativity, fame, success, brilliance

Sphere: Art, beauty, creativity, fame, success, brilliance, optimism, the love of the beautiful, public recognition.

Well-developed: Artistic, creative, charismatic, optimistic, drawn to beauty and the limelight, capable of fame and brilliance, generous, lucky.
Over-developed: Show-off, extravagant, vain, obsessed with appearance/money/fame, fickle.
Deficient/flat: Dull life, little aesthetic sense, lack of brilliance or recognition, plodding existence without sparkle.
Indian view: Surya mount = fame, status, government favor, vitality, the soul's radiance; strong Sun supports leaders, performers, those who shine publicly.

Mount of Mercury (बुध) — communication, business, wit, science

Sphere: Communication, commerce, science, quickness, wit, eloquence, cleverness, adaptability, medicine, trade, persuasion.

Well-developed: Articulate, shrewd, witty, good at business and science, persuasive, adaptable, quick-minded, good with money and people.
Over-developed: Cunning, slyness, deceit, restlessness, a "trickster" energy, tendency to exaggerate or mislead.
Deficient/flat: Poor communication, naivety in business, dullness in commerce, difficulty expressing ideas.
Indian view: Budh mount = intellect, speech, trade, calculation; supports merchants, writers, doctors, analysts.

Mount of Venus (शुक्र) — love, vitality, sensuality, warmth

Sphere: Love, passion, vitality, warmth, sensuality, beauty, family affection, health and physical vigor, the capacity to give and receive love. (The large pad at the thumb's base, encircled by the life line.)

Well-developed (full, firm, pink): Warm, loving, passionate, vital, healthy, generous, magnetic, fond of beauty and pleasure, strong family feeling.
Over-developed (very large, hard): Excessive passion, sensuality, possessiveness, indulgence, restlessness in love.
Deficient/flat (small, hollow): Coldness, low vitality, weak passions, little warmth or physical energy, possible health/circulation weakness.
Indian view: Shukra mount = love, marriage, luxury, arts, sensual and material enjoyment, vitality; central to relationship and vitality reading.

Mount of Luna / Moon (चंद्र) — imagination, intuition, emotion, travel

Sphere: Imagination, intuition, the subconscious, creativity, romance, restlessness, love of travel and water, psychic sensitivity, the emotional/dreamy nature.

Well-developed: Imaginative, intuitive, creative, romantic, drawn to travel/sea/mystery, sensitive, often artistically or spiritually gifted.
Over-developed: Over-imaginative, fanciful, restless, escapist, moody, prone to delusion or excessive daydreaming, instability.
Deficient/flat: Unimaginative, literal, prosaic, little intuition or romance, dislikes change and travel.
Indian view: Chandra mount = mind (manas), emotion, mother, imagination, fluctuation; a strong Luna supports poets, mystics, sailors, dreamers, the psychically sensitive.

The Mars mounts and Plain of Mars (मंगल) — courage, aggression, endurance

Mars is split into two mounts and a plain — together they read the person's courage, fighting spirit, and resistance.

Lower (Inner) Mars — between thumb and the start of the life line (inside the palm near the life-line origin): active courage, physical bravery, aggression, the fighting instinct, the willingness to attack/initiate.
Developed: brave, assertive, fights for what they want, physical courage.
Excessive: aggressive, quarrelsome, violent temper.
Deficient: timid, avoids confrontation.
Upper (Outer) Mars — on the percussion edge between Mercury and Luna: passive courage, endurance, resistance, moral courage, the ability to hold one's ground and persist under adversity.
Developed: resilient, calm under pressure, endures hardship, brave in a quiet steadfast way.
Excessive: harsh, cruel, stubborn resistance.
Deficient: gives up easily, can't withstand pressure.
Plain of Mars — the central hollow:
Firm/full: balanced courage, good resistance.
Very hollow/soft: lack of fight, can be easily defeated.

Indian view: Mangal mount(s) = energy, courage, blood, brothers, property, anger, drive; central to a "Manglik"-style reading of temperament and conflict.

Rahu and Ketu (राहु / केतु) — Indian addition

Indian palmistry adds the shadow planets:

Rahu: read in the central palm (Plain of Mars region) — sudden events, foreign connections, ambition without limit, confusion, obsession, the unconventional and the karmic "amplifier."
Ketu: read toward the lower palm/wrist — spirituality, detachment, past-life carryover, sudden losses or liberations, the "reducer," moksha-tendency.

Reading the mounts together — the "dominant mount"

A real reading identifies which mount is dominant (highest, firmest, most marked) — this becomes a primary key to the person's type:

PART B — THE FINGERS (अंगुलियां)

Each finger is named for the mount beneath it and carries that planet's qualities, expressed through the conscious, willed personality. A finger is read by: its length, its set (height on the palm), its flexibility, its tip shape, and the balance of its three phalanges.

B1. Finger length — overall

Long fingers (middle finger ≈ as long as or longer than the palm): detail-oriented, patient, analytical, thoughtful, sometimes slow, intellectual.
Short fingers (clearly shorter than the palm): quick, intuitive, impatient, big-picture, act fast, dislike detail.

Index finger — Jupiter finger (ambition, ego, leadership)

Measured against the ring (Apollo) finger as a reference:

The longest finger; the balance-point of the hand:

Long and straight: Serious, prudent, responsible, studious, cautious.
Very long: Morbid, withdrawn, gloomy, overly solitary.
Short: Careless, frivolous, irresponsible, dislikes routine and rules, restless.
Bent toward Jupiter: Saturnine seriousness colored by ambition.

Ring finger — Apollo / Sun finger (creativity, fame, risk, self-expression)

Long (approaching the height of the middle finger): Strong creative drive, love of fame/limelight, artistic, a gambler's streak, takes risks for recognition or beauty.
Average: Healthy creative and aesthetic sense.
Short: Little interest in art, fame, or self-display; practical, low risk-appetite.
Apollo equal to or longer than the index (Jupiter) finger: A strong gambler/risk-taker, drawn to speculation, performance, or chance.

Little finger — Mercury finger (communication, business, sexuality, shrewdness)

This small finger is disproportionately important — it governs communication and relationships:

Long (tip reaches past the top joint of the ring finger): Eloquent, persuasive, shrewd, good at business and science, articulate, influential.
Average (tip reaches the top joint of the ring finger): Normal, balanced communication.
Short (well below the top joint of the ring finger): Difficulty expressing, naive in business, struggles to assert in relationships, communication blocks.
Low-set (set much lower on the palm than the other fingers): A common and significant sign — early hardship, a sense of being held back, difficulty being heard, struggle in relationships or self-expression (very important to note).
Bent/twisted little finger: Traditionally shrewdness or, if very twisted, a tendency to bend the truth — read cautiously, with confirmation.

B3. Finger SET (the height at which fingers join the palm)

Look at the line where the fingers meet the palm:

Even set (all four roughly on an arch, none dropped): Balanced self-esteem and confidence across all areas.
Index (Jupiter) set low: Sense of inferiority, lack of confidence in ambition/leadership despite ability.
Little finger (Mercury) set low: As above — a key sign of early struggle, feeling unheard, relationship/communication difficulty (one of the most-noted "set" signs).
All fingers set high and even: Strong self-confidence.

B4. Finger TIPS (the shape of the very tip — reads how the person processes the world)

Square tips: Practical, orderly, conventional, methodical, fair, likes rules and regularity.
Spatulate tips (flared, fan-like): Active, energetic, original, inventive, restless, loves action and novelty.
Conic / round tips: Emotional, impulsive, artistic, intuitive, quick, sociable, acts on feeling.
Pointed tips: Idealistic, sensitive, intuitive, dreamy, spiritual, impractical.
Mixed tips (different on different fingers): Versatile; read each finger's tip for that planet's expression.

B5. The three PHALANGES of each finger (which "world" the person lives in)

Each finger has three sections (phalanges):

Top phalange (nail section): the mental/spiritual/idealistic world.
Middle phalange: the practical/business/intellectual-applied world.
Bottom phalange (nearest palm): the material/physical/sensual world.

Compare their relative lengths:

Long top phalanges (overall): lives in the mind, ideas, the spiritual/abstract.
Long middle phalanges: practical, business-minded, applied intelligence.
Long/thick bottom phalanges: materialistic, sensual, physical appetites strong (food, comfort, possessions).

Read per finger, e.g.:

A long top phalange of Jupiter = idealistic, principled ambition; a thick bottom phalange of Jupiter = ambition for material gain and power.
A long top phalange of Mercury = high-minded, eloquent, scientific/spiritual communication; a thick base = shrewd material dealing.

B6. Finger SPACING (how the person holds the hand naturally open)

Ask the user to hold their hand open naturally:

Wide gaps between all fingers: Open, independent, unconventional, free-spirited, generous, doesn't conform.
Fingers held tightly together: Cautious, conventional, careful, self-protective, fearful, holds on.
Wide gap between thumb and hand: Generosity, openness, independence.
Narrow gap thumb-to-hand: Caution, reserve, careful with self and resources.
Gap between index and middle (Jupiter–Saturn): Independent thinker, doesn't follow the crowd in opinions.
Gap between ring and little (Apollo–Mercury): Independent in action/relationships, unconventional in love or career, "does their own thing."
Little finger held far apart from the rest: A frequent sign of someone who feels separate in relationships, or is independent/unconventional in intimacy and self-expression.

PART C — THE THUMB (अंगूठा) — the most important single feature

Cheiro and the Indian tradition agree: the thumb alone can carry more weight than any line. It represents willpower, logic, and the force of the personality — the "amount of the person" present. A weak thumb undermines even a brilliant hand; a strong thumb can carry a modest one to success.

C1. Thumb size and the rule of will

Large, strong, long thumb: Strong willpower, determination, leadership, self-control, success-drive. These people run their own lives.
Small, short, weak thumb: Lack of willpower, easily led, emotional rather than determined, follows others. (Such a person may be brilliant or loving but struggles to enforce their will.)
Medium, well-proportioned: Balanced will and reason.

The decisive sign: When in doubt about a person's capacity to achieve what their other features promise, look to the thumb. A great head line with a weak thumb = brilliant ideas rarely carried out. A modest head line with a powerful thumb = a determined person who makes the most of average gifts.

C2. The three parts of the thumb

Top phalange (the nail section) — WILL. Long/strong = strong willpower, decisiveness, the power to act and command. Short/thick = weak will, or (if thick and clubbed) brute stubbornness rather than refined will.
Second phalange (the middle, waist section) — LOGIC / REASON. Long = good reasoning, tact, the ability to think before acting. Short = acts without reasoning; jumps to action.

The balance of will (top) to logic (second) is crucial:

Firm/stiff thumb (top joint does not bend back): Strong-willed, determined, reliable, stubborn, careful, doesn't bend to others or circumstances, steady and dependable, can be inflexible.
The ideal: Firm enough to hold its will, with a little give — determined but not rigid.

C5. Thumb tip shape

Square tip: Practical, fair, just willpower.
Spatulate tip: Energetic, active, restless will.
Conic/rounded tip: Adaptable, refined, sometimes less forceful will.

C6. The "low-set" vs "high-set" thumb

Low-set thumb (joins the hand low, wide natural angle): More instinctive, free, generous, independent, often more talented and adaptable.
High-set thumb (joins high, close to fingers): More cautious, conventional, restrained, less adaptable.

C7. Thumb in the Indian tradition

Indian palmistry reads the thumb's three sections as will, logic, and love (Venus), and also examines the patterns at the base and the flexibility. A long, straight, firm thumb is highly auspicious — it indicates a self-made, determined, successful nature. PART D — Putting Chirognomy Together (a worked synthesis)

A reading of structure alone (before any line) can already be rich. Example:

Hand: Air type (square palm, long fingers); firm-elastic consistency; fine skin; pink. Mounts: Mercury and Jupiter both well-developed and firm; Luna moderate; Venus moderate. Fingers: long, knotty, square-tipped; long little (Mercury) finger; index slightly long. Thumb: long, firm, will and logic balanced, medium angle. Reading (structure only): A clear, methodical, highly intellectual person (Air, long knotty fingers) with strong communication and business gifts (Mercury developed + long little finger) and genuine leadership ambition and confidence (Jupiter developed + slightly long index). Practical and orderly in approach (square tips, knots). Strong, balanced willpower that reasons before acting and follows through (long firm balanced thumb). Generous but prudent (medium thumb angle). Warm enough but led more by mind than by passion (Venus only moderate; Air hand). Type: a capable communicator-leader/strategist — well-suited to business, law, science, teaching, or any field uniting intellect, communication, and disciplined execution. Only after this structural reading does the palmist turn to the lines — which then add the events, the timing, and the emotional story onto this well-understood character.

This is the difference between a real reading and a scripted one: the structure is read as an integrated whole, in light of the constitution, before the lines are ever interpreted.

PART E — THE APEX OF EACH MOUNT (precise displacement reading)

Every mount has an apex — its highest point, identifiable by where the skin-ridge pattern forms a small triangle (the tri-radius) or where the mount visibly peaks. The apex is rarely dead-centre under its finger, and where it leans refines the reading:

Apex centred under its finger: the mount's qualities are pure and balanced.
Apex displaced toward a neighbouring mount: the mount "borrows" the neighbour's flavour.
Jupiter apex toward Saturn: ambition tempered by seriousness/caution; a graver, more responsible drive.
Jupiter apex toward the thumb/edge: ambition tied to self and family, more personal.
Saturn apex toward Jupiter: seriousness lifted by ambition (a fortunate shift — Saturn's gloom lightened).
Saturn apex toward Apollo: the serious nature warmed by creativity and a love of beauty.
Apollo apex toward Saturn: creativity disciplined, art with depth and gravity.
Apollo apex toward Mercury: creativity harnessed to communication/commerce — the artist who can also sell and speak.
Mercury apex toward Apollo: business/communication gifts with flair and showmanship.
Mercury apex toward the percussion edge: shrewdness with a restless, independent streak.

For the lower mounts, the fullest part is read similarly — Venus leaning toward the thumb = more wilful/assertive love; Venus toward the life line/centre = warmth poured into family and the immediate world. Luna high toward the percussion = active outward imagination/travel; Luna low toward the wrist = deep subconscious, dreams, the inner/psychic life.

PART F — MOUNT COMBINATIONS (paired dominance)

A real person is usually defined by two strong mounts, not one. The pair, read together, gives a far sharper portrait than either alone. The major fortunate and characteristic pairings:

Jupiter + Apollo: the charismatic leader who shines publicly — ambition plus brilliance; natural for public life, leadership with flair, the admired figure.
Jupiter + Mercury: the persuasive leader-communicator — ambition plus eloquence and shrewdness; politics, business leadership, advocacy, teaching at scale.
Jupiter + Saturn: the serious, principled authority — ambition plus discipline and depth; the judge, the institution-builder, the grave leader who endures.
Saturn + Mercury: the deep researcher/analyst — gravity plus sharp intellect; science, investigation, scholarship, strategy.
Saturn + Luna: the philosopher-mystic or the melancholic artist — depth plus imagination; profound, introspective, drawn to the unseen (watch for isolation/melancholy if both are heavy and hard).

Venus + Jupiter: generous, warm, expansive, dignified affection — the large-hearted, hospitable, magnanimous nature.

When three or more mounts are strong, read the dominant pair as the core and the third as a strong supporting theme. When all are flat, the hand is "low-energy" across the board — read vitality from the constitution and look to the lines and thumb for where the limited force is directed.

PART G — Sensitivity Pads, Droplets, and Rare Finger Signs

Sensitivity pads ("droplets" / drops of water on the fingertips): small fleshy pads on the inner face of the fingertips. They indicate heightened sensitivity of touch and perception — refinement, tact, a delicate responsiveness to people and environment, often artistic or healing sensitivity. Knuckle prominence (the "knots") revisited: smooth fingers + strong mounts = a person whose abundant energy flows on instinct; knotty fingers + strong mounts = the same energy filtered through analysis and deliberation. The combination of knot-pattern with mount-strength tells you whether the person is a spontaneous force or a considered one.
