Vastu वास्तु

Vastu Shastra is the classical Indian science of architecture, governing how buildings should be designed and oriented to harmonise with directional energies (the eight cardinal/intercardinal directions plus center and the elements). It dates to ancient texts (sections appear in Brihat Samhita, ~6th c. CE) and was systematised in Mayamatam and Manasara (medieval texts).

Vastu assigns each direction to a planet, an element, and a deity:

Cardinal Vastu rules (the "must-not-violate" list)

These are the rules every Indian Vastu consultant checks first:

1. Brahmasthan (center) must be open

The center of the home/plot represents Brahma — cosmic energy. It should not be obstructed by heavy furniture, beams, staircases, columns, toilets, or the kitchen. An open courtyard or empty floor space here is ideal.

2. Kitchen in South-East (Agneya)

Fire = Agni = SE. Kitchen elsewhere is a dosha. Worst placement: kitchen in NE (Ishan) — water-fire conflict. The cook should face East while cooking (per most lineages).

3. Master bedroom in South-West (Nairutya)

SW represents Earth = stability, weight. Head of household belongs here. The bed should be positioned so the head points South or East — not North (the "north head" rule is widely emphasised in Indian tradition; classical texts say north-head sleep causes restlessness because it opposes Earth's magnetic pull, in the traditional explanation).

4. Pooja room in North-East (Ishan)

NE is the most sacred zone. Deities face East or West; the worshipper faces East or North while praying.

5. Toilets and septic tanks

• Acceptable: South, West, NW (mid-zone), SE (some classical sources permit).
• Avoid: NE (most severe), Center (Brahmasthan), directly opposite the kitchen.
• The toilet/septic should NEVER be in NE — considered the most serious vastu dosha.

6. Main entrance (Mukhya Dwar)

Best directions for main entry:

• East (preferred for most lineages) — invites the rising Sun.
• North — invites Kuber (wealth).
• North-East — invites both energies (but check the specific position; the door should be in the N or E portion of NE, not the absolute corner).

Avoid:

• South-West entrance.
• Doors with obstructions directly facing them (a wall, electric pole, big tree right at the entry — "vedha dosha").

7. Water sources (sink, well, water tank)

Underground water (well, sump, bore): NE quadrant is best. Overhead water tank: SW is best (heavy on top of heavy = stable). Kitchen sink: NE corner of the kitchen.

8. Staircase

• Should be in S, SW, or W.
• Should NOT be in NE.
• Direction of climb: clockwise preferred (when ascending, you turn right).
• Total steps: traditionally an odd number.

9. Heavy items, storage, lockers

• South and West walls — best for heavy almirahs, cupboards.
• Locker / cash safe: SW quadrant, door opening to N or E (the wealth flows in from the wealth directions).

10. Open spaces

• More open space in N, E, NE than in S, W, SW. The plot should be "lower" (relatively) in NE and "higher" in SW.

Common Vastu doshas (problems) + remedies

Important caveat on remedies: Authentic Vastu first prescribes architectural correction; "remedies" (pyramids, crystals, plaques) are secondary. Apps and consultants who sell expensive remedies for every problem are commercialising — the original tradition emphasises moving things, not buying things.

Vastu for offices/businesses

Many of the same rules, with adjustments:

• Owner's cabin: SW corner, owner sitting facing N or E.
• Reception: NE or N.
• Accounts/cash counter: N (Kuber's direction).
• Heavy machinery/storerooms: SW or S.
• Pantry: SE.
• Toilet: NW or W (never NE or center).

Vastu for plots (before building)

• Shape: square or rectangular is best. Cut corners are doshas (cut NE = severe; cut SW = good).
• Slope: plot should slope from SW (high) to NE (low). Water should flow toward NE.
• Soil: Vastu traditional tests include checking soil colour, smell, and whether dug-up soil refills the same hole (indicates good earth).
• Road position (dvarvedh):
• East-facing plot: good.
• North-facing plot: very good (Kuber).
• South-facing plot: requires care.
• West-facing plot: workable with adjustments.

Honest framing

1. Vastu is a tradition, not a science. Some principles have practical / climatic logic (kitchen in SE = morning sun for fresh cooking; NE openness = morning light into the home). Others are purely traditional/symbolic.
2. "Remedies" can be a scam vector. Authentic Vastu prescribes layout fixes first. The "buy this pyramid for ₹15,000 to fix your bedroom" model is commercial, not classical.
